The Village
Live and feel the Umbrian village way of life.
Live and feel the Umbrian village way of life.
The Black Truffle Lodge is located in the small village of Pettino which is tucked away among the Apennine Mountains in Umbria.
Pettino is divided up into three hamlets each perched up on a different plateau and surrounded by beech tree forest. The Lodge is built into the historic farm buildings in one of the hamlets so you will live amongst the locals and can take pleasure in the peacefulness and timelessness a picturesque mountain village.
The small village of Pettino has a constitution older than that of the United States of America, and it is still in effect. When the seven original families bought the lands around the village in the late 1400’s they set up a constitution to govern the lands and it is still in use today. To be an owner, truffle hunter or farmer of the land, one has to be a direct descendant of the seven original families.
In the village, life goes on as it did centuries ago with shepherds, farmers or truffle hunters living each day in their Umbrian traditions. Aside from taking part in the activities we organize for our guests at the Black Truffle Lodge, you can participate in the daily life of the villagers as much as you like. We want you to feel a part of village life and to absorb the serene atmosphere and tranquility.
You may also catch the occasional glimpse of the local wildlife surrounding the village including wolves, wild boar, foxes, hare and porcupines. If you do not see them in the wild then you may find them prepared in traditional Umbrian style and served during one of your meals at the Lodge.
A fact of the Village is that animals outnumber people and while you stroll around the Lodge and hamlet you will likely pass sheep, the odd Chianina cow, some of the many canines, cats, chickens and Martina the local pet pig. The sounds of these animals offer a peaceful alternative to the echoes of city congestion and you will occasionally feel at home with their presence.
